Photo to 3D Print

Upload a photo of a figurine, a toy, an ornament or a character, and the X3D Studios design studio turns it into a 3D model. We repair the mesh and check that it will print, then print it on our own farm in Austin, Texas and ship it to you. Or download the model and print it yourself.

  • One photo, photo + text, or several views
  • Printability check
  • STL · 3MF · OBJ
  • Printed in Austin, TX
How it works

From a picture to a part in your hands

  1. 1

    Upload a photo

Image, Image + Text to steer it with words, or Multi-view with 2 to 4 photos of one object. PNG, JPEG or WEBP, up to 10 MB each.
  2. 2

    The AI builds the model

From one photo it takes about 45 to 90 seconds by the studio’s estimate, though Tripo, which image runs use on Auto, can take several minutes; Multi-view takes several minutes. A Fast Draft from a photo costs 2 credits, Hi-Fi 3.
  3. 3

    It is repaired and checked

Welded, holes filled and auto-oriented, then reviewed on the server for a closed surface, wall thickness, overhangs and fit on the plate. A model that fails the review cannot be ordered.
  4. 4

    Print it, or download it

Pick a material, colour and size and the print is priced from a real slice, or download STL, 3MF and OBJ.
Photos

Which photos work

One subject on a plain, contrasting background, in flat and even light, sharp and filling most of the frame, shot a little above from a three-quarter angle. Front and back of the same object is worth more than four near-identical angles.

A photo of a flat picture, a screen or a framed print is refused before a credit is spent. The image-to-3D guide covers every rule and limit.

Cost

What it costs: credits for the model, dollars for the print

Making the model and printing it are paid separately, and printing never spends a credit. A new account starts with 5 generation credits; packs and plans are on pricing.

A failed generation refunds its credits. Higher mesh or texture settings add more.

The design page weighs your actual model at the size you choose and shows its price before you order. The cost calculator prices any weight.

Size

How big it comes out

A model made from a photo has no real size of its own, so every one arrives normalised to 170 × 160 × 170 mm, half a plate. When you order you scale it from 50% to 300%, and the price is weighed again at that size. The largest plate in the fleet is 340×320×340mm.

Honest expectations

What the AI can and cannot do

  • It invents what the camera never saw. One photo shows one side; the back and sides are a guess, and a likeness is not guaranteed.
  • Fine detail softens. Faces, small text and thin parts can come out rounded or simplified. Several photos of the same object leave less to guess.
  • It makes shapes, not dimensioned parts. For anything that has to fit, thread or snap together, model it in CAD and upload the file instead.
  • What you see on screen is what gets printed. Turn the model round before you order it.
  • Use photos you took, or have permission to use.

Questions about photo to 3D print

Can I turn a photo into a 3D print?

Yes. Upload the photo at /design, using Image, Image + Text or Multi-view (2 to 4 photos of one object). The AI builds a 3D model from it, the mesh is repaired and checked for printability, and you order it printed from the same page or download it. A model whose review fails cannot be ordered until it is fixed.

How much does a photo to 3D print cost?

Two parts. Making the model costs generation credits: 2 for a Fast Draft from a photo, 3 for Hi-Fi, and a new account starts with 5. Printing it is priced in dollars by weight and never spends a credit: PLA is $0.12/g, so a model that slices to 40 g costs $4.80 to print and one that slices to 120 g $14.40, plus postage. The design page shows the real price for your model at the size you choose.

Will the print look exactly like the photo?

Not guaranteed, and nobody honest can promise it. A single photo shows one side, so the AI invents the back and the sides the camera never saw, and fine detail such as a face or text can come out softened. Two to four photos from different sides of the same object give it far less to guess. Look the model over on screen before you order: what you see there is what gets printed.

What kind of photo works best?

One subject on a plain background that contrasts with it, in flat, even light, sharp and filling most of the frame, shot a little above and from a three-quarter angle. Figurines, toys, ornaments and chunky objects reconstruct well; glass, chrome, hair, fur and lattices struggle. Images can be PNG, JPEG or WEBP, up to 10 MB each. A photo of a flat picture or a screen is refused before any credit is spent. /docs/studio/image-to-3d has the full list.

How big will my figurine be?

Every generated model arrives normalised to 170 × 160 × 170 mm, half a plate. When you order you can scale it from 50% to 300%, and the price is re-weighed at that size. The largest plate in the fleet is 340×320×340mm.

Can I download the model instead of ordering a print?

Yes, as STL, 3MF and OBJ, to print yourself or edit, whether or not you also order a print from us. A model that failed the printability review can still be downloaded and repaired.

How long does it take?

Generating a model from one photo takes about 45 to 90 seconds by the studio’s estimate, though Tripo, which image runs use on Auto, can take several minutes; Multi-view takes several minutes. The print then ships at the speed you choose: Normal print in 4–5 business days, or Priority print ($5, or 10% of the items when that is more) in 1–2, and then US standard shipping is 4–6 business days in transit and express 2–3 business days.
