Multicolor 3D Printing Service

Upload your Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer project .3mf, a MakerWorld download included, and we slice each plate in the colours you set up in it, check it really prints that way, and price it from that slice. Up to 8 colours on one print, made by X3D Studios on our own farm in Austin, Texas.

  • Up to 8 colours
  • Priced from a real slice
  • Purge included
  • MakerWorld 3MF projects
Two ways in

A project, or a plate you sliced

Both are uploaded at /print. In both, the colour price is a real slice of the print in its colours, at a colour rate per gram that rises with each colour.

5 to 8 colours on either route adds the $25.00 second-AMS fee once per order line.

Pricing

How a colour print is priced

The grams that slice measures, with the purge and every filament change already inside them, at the colour rate of the project’s plastic: +$0.03/g at two colours and +$0.02/g for each colour after (PLA $0.15, $0.17 and $0.19 for two, three and four). Colours are counted by what actually prints, so a filament the file assigns but the slicer never feeds is not charged for and not loaded.

Colour is expensive in time, not paint. Each change purges about 84 mm³ of filament and takes about 1.3 minutes, and a part with colours spread through it changes on most layers. That is why the price has to come from the slice and not from the model’s size. Purge and waste in colour prints goes through the numbers.

Per gram, at standard layers; premium layers multiply the whole rate by 1.75. A colour print spends hours swapping and purging that a one-colour print of the same weight does not, and those hours could print another order.

The upload page says which rule applies, and every one of these can still be printed in one colour. In colour, a project prints at 100% scale on our standard 0.2 mm profile, keeping its parts, modifiers and paint. Multi-colour printing in the docs has every detail.

Downloaded models

Found it on MakerWorld, Printables or Thingiverse?

You do not need a printer, or to slice anything yourself.

  1. 1

    Download the project

Take the .3mf project file where the model offers one, as MakerWorld does. An STL works too, in one colour, or paint it in Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer and save the project.
  2. 2

    Upload it at /print

As you downloaded it. The page lists the colours the project assigns, each with its material.
  3. 3

We slice it in its colours

Plate by plate, in the background. A small project takes under a minute; one with many plates can take several.
  4. 4

    Order

At the price that slice measured, or choose one colour instead.

Check the licence. Many models shared on MakerWorld, Printables and Thingiverse are for personal use only, so printing one for yourself is fine but ordering copies to sell may not be.

The 12 colours we stock

A colour print is loaded from these spools and charged at the stock rate. If an exact shade matters, such as a brand colour, write it in the order note or ask us before you order.

Plain words

Multicolour, not full colour

  • Each region prints in one of up to 8 solid filament colours, with a hard edge between them.
  • Photographic full colour, with blended gradients across a surface, needs a different kind of machine, which we do not run.
  • It suits two-colour logos and signs, figures with painted features, and colour-coded parts.

Questions about multicolour printing

How many colours can you print in one part?

Up to 8. One AMS holds four spools, so a print in 5 to 8 colours needs a second unit chained on and loaded by hand, and adds $25.00 once per order line however many copies. When no printer has a second unit loaded, such an order is still accepted and prints once one has, which can take longer than the live lead time; the price panel says so when that is the case.

Can I print a MakerWorld or Printables project in its colours?

Yes. Download the Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer project .3mf and upload it at /print as it is. We slice each plate in the colours the project assigns, up to eight, and price it from that slice, purge included, at the colour rate per gram (+$0.03/g at two colours and +$0.02/g for each colour after (PLA $0.15, $0.17 and $0.19 for two, three and four)). Many shared models are licensed for personal use only, so check the model's licence before you order copies to sell.

How is a multicolour print priced?

From a real slice of the print in its colours. We slice each plate with the project's own filaments, parts and paint and charge what that slice measured, purge and filament changes included, at the project's plastic's colour rate: +$0.03/g at two colours and +$0.02/g for each colour after (PLA $0.15, $0.17 and $0.19 for two, three and four). Colours are counted by what actually lays down plastic, so a filament the file assigns but never prints is not charged for.

Why does a four-colour print cost more than one colour?

Because the printer spends most of its time swapping filament. Every change purges about 84 mm³ of plastic and takes about 1.3 minutes, and a part with colours spread through it changes on almost every layer: a 300-layer part that is 40 g and half an hour in one colour can measure nearer 136 g and 20 hours in four (/docs/studio/multi-color). The slice measures all of it, which is why the price comes from the slice and not from the model's size.

Is this full-colour 3D printing?

No. It is multi-filament FDM: each region prints in one of up to eight solid filament colours, with hard edges between them. Photographic full colour, with blended gradients across a surface, needs a different kind of machine, which we do not run.

Why won't my project print in colour?

The page says why. The usual reasons: one plate uses two filament types, such as PLA and PETG or even PLA and PLA-CF; different plates use different base plastics; the colour changes at a set layer height or through a height-range modifier; more than eight filaments print; or only one actually lays down plastic. Each of those can still be printed in one colour.

Can TPU be printed in more than one colour?

No. Flexible TPU prints from the external spool, because the AMS that switches colours cannot feed it, so a TPU part is always one colour, at $0.25/g.

Can I choose my own colours?

Yes, in your slicer: assign filaments to parts or paint the model in Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer, save the project and upload it. We stock 12 colours: White, Black, Red, Cyan, Sakura Pink, Sunny Orange, Green, Yellow, Mint Green, Lavender, Silver, Brown. If an exact shade matters, such as a brand colour, write it in the order note or ask at /contact before you order. A one-colour print can be any other colour at $0.20/g (Flexible TPU keeps its own $0.25/g), or a filament you name at $0.20/g.
